Redwood City, located between San Carlos and Menlo Park, is the county seat for San Mateo County. It is a large and diverse town, changing rapidly as Silicon Valley enterprise spreads north on the Peninsula. Restaurants, live music, theater and shopping can all be found in downtown.

Running east to west through Redwood City is Woodside Road. This thoroughfare serves as the city's main commuting artery, and but it is also a link to the town of Woodside, the redwoods beyond, and eventually the Pacific Ocean.

Redwood Shores is a planned community on the bay side of Redwood City. This incorporated island is built on land reclaimed from the bay. Neighborhood parks, walking paths, and neatly organized communities are the central theme of Redwood Shores. The western area of the island , bordering Highway 101, is home to several Fortune 500 Companies, most notably Oracle.
